Soldier highlight news Column
In Fort Hood, Texas, the largest Army base in the world, I worked with the local newspaper, the Fort Hood Sentinel, the create a weekly column called the Soldier Weekly Highlight. The intent of the column was to showcase the Soldiers that live and work on base. While stationed at Fort Hood, I noticed that people worked very hard to accomplish their mission and be good at their jobs, but there were not many opportunities to be recognized for their efforts and talents. That is why, as an Army Public Affairs Specialist, I pushed to create the Soldier Weekly Spotlight. This is my first article for that column, where SSG Jennifer Simmonds, an Army Healthcare Specialist at the base hospital, excelled as the All-Army Softball Team’s athletic trainer. While this article was just the beginning, the positive responses from Soldiers solidified the column where it is still weekly staple in the paper today.
Crisis Communication Plan W/ Example
Every organization is susceptible to public scrutiny. With poor crisis communication skills, one event can turn into a prolonged struggle that erodes the relationships with that organization, its employees, and the public they interact with. This sample shows how I break down situations that require crisis communication into diagnosable events where both the organization’s intent and the public’s perceptions are clear. Then I create action steps to fix key problems while crafting a public message that builds trust and positivity with the public. With the right insights and intent, crisis communication can build an organization’s reputation when done well.
JEMX Feature Story
Fort Hood hosted the largest military medical training event in the world, JEMX 2024 (Joint Emergency Medical Exercise) on June, 2024. This article was my opportunity to highlight this event where thousands of combat medics from around the world came to Fort Hood, Texas to learn about the newest insights and innovations for their craft. The trainers were the highest trained doctors and special forces medical staff in the military, all aiming to help each other save lives. This event took place over nine days and nights, spread out across a training area the size of road island. With a lot of detailed logistical planning, great information from the trainers, and amazing insights from the participants, this article came to fruition and is now used as a teaching example at Fort Hood.
